As I mentioned last week, I’m a big fan of the Nerd Lunch Podcast – their format is unique, and they always have fantastic show topics. That’s why I was honored when they asked me to fill their vaunted “Fourth Chair”, a position that comes with much power and responsibility.
This episode follows the Nerd Lunch “Drill Down” format, and covers vintage Hasbro G.I. Joe action figures, vehicles and playsets. Once we uncovered and exploited some of my more embarrassing pop culture blind spots, we talked a whole mess of G.I. Joe!
In this episode:
- Who had a Netflix G.I.Joe subscription as a kid
- Why Dr. Mindbender is my Primary Care Physician
- My 5 favorite Hasbro G.I. Joe figures
- Why Chuckles is the most divisive G.I. Joe of all time
- What’s under Evil-Lyn’s armor

I’ve never seen Doctor Who. Or even Star Wars in its entirety. I’ve seen some Star Trek but I don’t know much about it. I have a lot of “geek confessions” as they were called that podcast. I guess this is why I don’t really classify myself as a “nerd” or “geek” since I’m not into anything super popular on the tv or movie screen with the word “Star” in the title. 😉
Wish I had a spoiled Netflix-like figure rental service friend back in the day. lol. I didn’t start getting G.I. Joes til like 1986. I did trade my friend for a couple older G.I. Joe figures that I didn’t have. I enjoyed G.I. Joe from the mid 80s into the early 90s even. It was never my #1 because of MOTU, but it’s definitely up there as far as 1980s figure/cartoon property! I even watched the DiCk series and enjoyed some of that! 🙂
Definitely like most water-type guys too. Not just in G.I. Joe but with MOTU (Mer-Man!) and TMNT (lots) as well. Oh man, hating on the USS FLAGG! Wasn’t expecting that!

I didn’t have any big G.I. Joe playsets but I did have a few of the mid-late 80s Cobra vehicles. I definitely had a few snow-ones and the Snow Serpents were one of my favorite G.I. Joe figures so in the winter time, I played with those for hours out in the sometimes several feet of snow. #CobraIceDome In the summer time, the swimming pool, beach, or nearby stream were the sites for G.I. Joe battles.

I like Crystal Ball and I HAD Crystal Ball. His shield was friggin sweet man. I guess you can mostly blame Sy-Klone and his interplanetary radar lenticular sticker a couple years earlier for my approval of Crystal Ball. Evil Hypnotist of Cobra! Croc Master is also one of my favorites!
This was a fun listen. Really enjoyed the G.I. Joe discussion!
