UnderScoopFire Brigade Hall of Fame – Class of August 2012

by Howie Decker @HowardTheDeck on August 27, 2012

in Culture

Seven months and 26 podcast episodes ago, the UnderScoopFire Brigade was formed.

The best part is, we didn’t form the Brigade – you did!

It started with a simple call to arms, an experiment if you will. Since then, we’ve rarely taken the opportunity to refer to UnderScoopFire supporters as ‘The Brigade”, but we’ve always recognized those who help carry the USF torch and share our silly links and stories with their own social networks.

It’s time we started formally recognizing those who have helped make this all possible!

The UnderScoopFire site recently turned one year old, and we couldn’t (and wouldn’t) have done it without the support of our readers and podcast listeners. From here on out, at the end of every month we will induct a new class of UnderScoopFire supporters in to the USF Brigade Hall of Fame.

These folks are the best of the best – they tirelessly share every one of our links on Facebook and Twitter, regardless of how silly the headline. They recall their favorite segments from our podcasts and mention them via the social networks. They regularly leave comments on our site, even when the discussion is about things like Under Armour’s failed plan to create a secret paramilitary group to defend the Southeast Asian country of Laos. (seriously, thank you.)

Thank you for encouraging us.

If you don’t see your name in the first class, it is NOT because we don’t appreciate you greatly or haven’t noticed – it’s because we wanted to spread the inductions over the months – what fun would it be to put everyone in at once?

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the first class of inductees into the UnderScoopFire Brigade Hall of Fame:

Dean Schaeffer – inducted by the Insecticon Shrapnel

Dean (@LamarRevenger on Twitter) is always at the ready with a quick retweet (retweet?) or Facebook ‘Like’ as soon as we publish a new article or podcast. His feedback on our podcasts has been a huge part of the motivation to continue recording them.

Dean proudly displayed the USF Brigade sticker we sent his way, and went on to snap pics of it in all sorts of hilarious settings including in the hand of the Catherine Hershey statue at the center of the school where he works.

A sincere thank you to Dean for his continued support of our site- we proudly install him as the first inductee into the USF Brigade Hall of Fame!

Classick Material – inducted by Spider-Man

Inducting Classick was an easy call. He will eventually be joined by all of his Cold Slither Podcast co-hosts, but we wanted to jump on the opportunity to thank him for sharing our links on Facebook and Twitter on a daily basis. Cold Slither has created a huge voice in the geek social network, so every time Classick comments on a page or shares a link we are sincerely thankful.

Classick’s comic book collection is impressive. If you follow our site or podcast, I can’t recommend the Cold Slither Podcast to you more. They have the same twisted sense of humor and love for nostalgia we do, and everything they put out is entertaining and thought provoking. Classick can often be found waxing poetic on comic book history or current geek matters, and his analysis is always spot on.

Dan Uthman – inducted by The Greatest American Hero

Dan came to us via the #GIJOE pipeline on Twitter. In our first few months of existence, we focused on generating a lot of G.I. Joe content on our site, as it is A. important to us, and B. we were introduced to a large Joe fan contingent on Twitter.

Dan is a lifelong G.I. Joe fan, but we decided to have The Greatest American Hero induct him since he revealed that GAH was the only superhero costume he ever made.

Dan brought one of our podcast episodes to the attention of a Washington Post writer, who then blogged about that ep of our podcast. This type of exposure was more than we had ever dreamed of when we started the site, and for that we will be eternally grateful.

Clarence Riley – inducted by Wendy

The founder of Red Headed Mule (a geeky take on popular culture and creative arts), Clarence has been a staunch supporter of UnderScoopFire. In RHM’s ‘About’ section, it says the site’s name was chosen because Clarence likes quirkiness. That is undoubtedly the prevailing redeeming quality he sees in us.

We greatly admire Riley’s ability to stick to the mission. Any follower of ours has surely noticed the multiple course corrections we’ve gone through, the starts and stops with new monthly features, etc. We truly appreciate you enduring these trial periods, one of which was the Scoop of the Day (which may or may not be dead). In each day’s Scoop, we’d end with some silly graphic like an angry houseplant or a fictional failed marketing scheme, and we eventually gave up on it. At Red Headed Mule, they set out to add a little quirkiness to a seriously entertaining site, and they’ve stuck to it. That takes fortitude, and we recognize it.

eclectik – inducted by Marques Houston (as he appears in dreams)

See? We told you Classick’s Cold Slither mates would be inducted soon! In all honesty, while we were introduced to eclectik via the Cold Slither Pod, the world now knows him as the host of the eclectik discussion Podcast. To say eclectik has a “wealth of pop culture historical knowledge” is a drastic understatement, so he surely knew the risks of launching a spin off from a successful show (see: Joey, Golden Palace, Joanie Loves Chachi). That said, he has executed to perfection, as his show has set the bar for production value and comedic quality.

What can we say about the 6th Voltron lion? eclectik has joined the USF Podcast Roundtable Voltron on multiple occasions, and has had many of the USF lions on his show. We are honored to consider him our 4th Amigo, the 5th Ghostbuster, or the 7th Constructic- you know what? You get it.

Keep sharing, commenting and retweeting! Next month we induct a new class into the UnderScoopFire Brigade Hall of Fame – until then, thank you for your continued support!

Howie Decker August 27, 2012 at 9:47 am

Thanks, Dex!

Big ups to all the inductees!

Howie Decker August 27, 2012 at 9:48 am

Tom you will undoubtedly head up the Sept class- can’t thank you enough for the daily RTs, comments, & Likes!

Classick Material August 27, 2012 at 9:54 am

To be inducted by Spidey, and I’m talkin’ 616 Peter Parker still married to Mary Jane in the comics as drawn by Mark Bagley and written by Gerry Conway Spidey (shout-out to Dan Slott, my second choice)…

… is truly an honor!!

And to be inducted along with such an illustrious class of esteemed peers just really goes to show that Children of the 80’s can stand united! Especially when this site keeps the WPHOF hotties comin’!

Excelsior!

Howie Decker August 27, 2012 at 10:18 am

You know it! I was glad Spidey was available to attend the induction ceremony. The back up was “Berbil #3” from Thundercats,

Classick Material August 27, 2012 at 1:25 pm

aw man, I once had a temporary tattoo of Berbil #3 on my hand. Or was it a sticker from a ThunderCats activity book? Either way, big fan of his work!

Lamar the Revenger August 27, 2012 at 10:25 am

Whaaaa…. I… no. no. nonononono.. I’m not worthy… I’m not worthy… Thank you so much.

Howie Decker August 28, 2012 at 10:13 am

You are more than worthy. The pic of the Brigade sticker in Hershey’s hand has granted you lifetime membership in any USF Hall of Fame we create… except maybe Wife Pretty.

MeisterShake August 27, 2012 at 11:21 am

Well done guys!

Will August 27, 2012 at 4:13 pm

Congrats, guys! It’s well-deserved for all of you. And happy birthday, USF.com. Are ya scoopin’ it?!

Howie Decker August 28, 2012 at 10:12 am

Will- can’t thank you enough for all of your support and advice over the last year. It’s been fun, and I’m glad I’ve gotten to meet a lot of great folks like you via the site.

Count Marzo August 27, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Very cool you are doing this. It’s not very often shoutouts like this are given!

Howie Decker August 28, 2012 at 10:12 am

Thanks Marzo – you are a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame. Sincere thank you for all of your support over the last year.

Toy Empire August 27, 2012 at 11:33 pm

Congratulations to all of the inductees!

@eclectik August 28, 2012 at 5:47 am

Wait.
Is this a dream?
A Nightmare?

What is HE doing here?
Is that a Fedora?
… are those Cheddar Biscuits?

Why is my family here?

Am I Donald Ducking it in front of my family?

This is a set up

King Zarkon will NOT stand for this!
The Drule Empire will rise up!

wait.

As the 6th Lion (The Brown Lion) I appreciate the kind words this is the second best thing to ever happen to me … best being when I was inducted into the Dolph Sweet Kanisky Klub

Howie Decker August 28, 2012 at 10:09 am

You ARE Donald Ducking it at the ceremony, which IS awkward. I was also shocked by Mr. Houston’s desire to induct you, as we had lined up hooded Cobra Commander WITH the Crimson Guard, but when they fell through Marques Crabmeat stepped up. And yes. the Kanisky Club – how could we compete with that? Gimme a break, man!
