Ghostbusters 3: Who Would You Choose as the Four NEW Ghostbusters?

in Nerd Culture

In a recent interview with Larry King, Dan Aykroyd says that they’ll be casting 4 new Ghostbusters for Ghostbusters 3.

It doesn’t sound like they plan to stray too far from the original formula, as Aykroyd elaborates: “We’re going to have to cast. We need four new Ghostbusters. We need four new Columbia students.”

Dan goes on to say that if Bill Murray wants in, the door is always open. They’ll find a spot for him, even if development and production is underway. With that said, I turn to you, fellow Scoopers-

Who would you cast as the four NEW Ghostbusters? Would you try to fill the archetypes established by Venkman, Stantz, Zeddmore and Spengler, or would you go with four entirely new personalities?

Keeping in mind this not a reboot, but a sequel (so no re-casting the four originals) – hit the comments with your casting choices!

I’ll start the festivities here:

  • Timothy Olyphant
  • Bill Hader
  • Donald Glover
  • Aaron Paul (mainly so he can make this face every time he sees something supernatural)
  • Assistant: Nicole Beharie

Clearly I’m thinking grad students as opposed to typical college-aged characters. Your turn!

Corey Chapman (@chapmanrunner) May 20, 2013 at 1:53 pm

This cast is perfect.

Howard Decker May 20, 2013 at 2:30 pm

thanks Cor! No changes at all?

joejoe June 24, 2013 at 11:15 am

please for the love of god! no black women to be casted. they always have to have a terrible attitude i cannot stand

What? July 12, 2013 at 9:10 am

That’s not true. Check out Dana Davis on “Franklin and Bash.”

Kap-El July 12, 2013 at 9:22 am

Way to be an ignorant piece of human filth, Joe Joe. There are tons of hilarious black and african american comedians, many of which are female. Open your mind, or continure being a complete and total racist, sexist idiot. The choice is yours.

Zdefense July 18, 2013 at 8:53 am

You’re not getting it. He’s saying that Hollywood can sometimes force the black woman stereotype attitude in certain movies, especially comedies. Although, Aisha Tyler would be great if they were looking in that direction, she definitely couldn’t be forced to act like that

Tank May 20, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Since I want him in more comedies I am going to Jon Hamm, then I think a female would be fun so Jennifer Lawrence, Zachary Quinto for the nerdy role maybe play Egon’s son and then maybe Jay Pharoah.

Howard Decker May 20, 2013 at 2:30 pm

awesome. Carrying on the AMC/SNL love!

Will May 20, 2013 at 3:37 pm

I’d stiçk with the guys who specialize in today’s comedy. I’d keep Glover, as he’s an excellent choice. I’d also go with Jay Baruschel, Jonah Hill, and Jason Segel.

Howard Decker May 20, 2013 at 3:48 pm

Love those choices. I’m all in on anything with Segel, Hill I’m becoming so-so on, but I’m not sure why because I enjoy everything he’s in. As long as it’s not Vaughn, Ferrell, Rudd, etc. Ready for some newer blood. I know Olyphant is not known for comedy but if you see that guy on Conan or any talk show setting he is hilarious. He’s definitely got the comedic chops. And we know Hader’s schedule just free up!

John Spence May 20, 2013 at 4:21 pm

Shoot cast me give let me have a try at it.

Daily D May 20, 2013 at 4:53 pm

Wasn’t Michael Cera rumored for this at one point? Glad that ship has sailed.

Brian Morin May 20, 2013 at 4:53 pm

I could see Jake Johnson as a Ghostbuster.

Howard Decker May 20, 2013 at 5:04 pm

YES!! I officially change my lineup, swapping anyone for Nick Miller. He needs a breakout role. Great call!

The Goodwill Geek May 20, 2013 at 5:38 pm

I think Jake Johnson was an inspired choice and could be brilliant as the sarcastic but blue-collar character that Winston once filled.

Donald Glover can play that childlike innocence to a tee and would be great as a new Ray.

I’d like to nominate Emma Stone because her comedy chops are outstanding, and we need a female Ghostbuster you guys. She could totally fill a Peter Venkman kind of role if they played it right.

I kind of love the idea of Jay Baruschel coming in as an Egon character, honestly. I think he could pull it off in a very awkward nu-nerdy kind of way.

Howard Decker May 20, 2013 at 5:52 pm

Baruchel. Stone. Johnson. Glover. I can see the poster now. Brilliant!

Armando May 20, 2013 at 7:54 pm

An all ginger cast would be great too…Bill Burr, Louis C.K., Simon Pegg and Zack Ward (maybe Carrot Top in place of Ward)

Howard Decker May 20, 2013 at 8:58 pm

That’s remarkable. Bill Burr is awesome in Breaking Bad, so he’s fine by me!

Kevin Hellions May 20, 2013 at 8:23 pm

Kevin Smith, Chris Hardwick, Marc Maron, Colt Cabana. With their assistant/secretary Aisha Tyler.

Where else are you going to get free reign to talk about ghosts in 2013? PodBusters!

Howard Decker May 20, 2013 at 8:59 pm

I was wondering where you were going with that cast! Maron’s got quite the head of steam going right now, parlaying the podcast into a IFC show. Who says there’s no money in podcasting?!

StephenT May 20, 2013 at 10:02 pm

I like the Olyphant pick- he’s amazing in Justified. I keeping hearing Glover is a geeks’ geek, but I’m not familiar w his work since I dont watch Community. Hader works, fits the SNL motif set in the originals

Kap-El May 20, 2013 at 10:27 pm

Clark Duke- Filling in as Blue Collar Winston Zeddemore’s Replacement, I’d cast Donald Glover as a cocksure Venkman, type. Ray’s dynamic could be filled by Jonah Hill, or Max from Happy Endings… as for Scientist’s Scientist Egon, Jay Baruchel would be a homerun, as would Michael Cera . I’d cast Alison Brie as the child of Louis and Janine, now a head scientist and atom smasher/ neutron scientist person.

Have Wil Arnett as Walter Peck’s replacement/as a callback role. Oscar would would be played by Daniel Radcliffe. I have no idea what

Howard Decker May 21, 2013 at 9:46 am

Love em all. Thanks for the extended analysis and supporting evidence!

@eclectik May 21, 2013 at 12:15 am

Everyone has great picks, allow me to try something different:

Jon Heder
Danny McBride
Joel McHale
Paul Rudd

Assistant: Katherine Heigl

Howard Decker May 21, 2013 at 9:46 am

I’m down for anything with McBride.

@eclectik May 21, 2013 at 12:15 am

Even More different-er

Zachary Levi
Jim Gaffigan
Taran Killam
Aziz Ansari

Assistant: Olivia Munn

Howard Decker May 21, 2013 at 9:46 am

Killam IS gonna be the next big thing. Good call. I could see Munn getting attached to this too.

@eclectik May 21, 2013 at 12:03 pm

Taran Killam Good to see I’m not the only on believing in him … he makes me laugh, I could definitely see him suiting up in a movie like that … or atleast be someone who the baddie tricked into helping him.

Munn would be great as one of the four … need a female buster.

ClarenceRHM May 21, 2013 at 7:14 am

Spike Lee,
Tia Carrera,
Art Bell,
Mike Nelson.

No others will do.

Howard Decker May 21, 2013 at 9:45 am

Well, since you said so, BOOK IT!

AdamS25 May 21, 2013 at 1:06 pm

Here are my four:

Hader
Olyphant
Jay Pharoah
Bradley Cooper

Assistant: Anna Kendrick or Emma Stone

Kap-El May 21, 2013 at 1:46 pm

Why are you guys skewing so old?

Howard Decker May 21, 2013 at 2:03 pm

Murray was 34, Ramis was 40, Aykroyd was 32 in the original. Most of the picks I’ve seen here are younger than that, besides Rudd.

Howard Decker May 21, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Anna Kendrick is a GREAT call, she’s got that same cute/hot appeal that Annie Potts had back then.

AdamS25 May 21, 2013 at 2:16 pm

Now that I think about it, I would take Cooper out and put John Krasinski in his place. I think he could be great with the right group around him.

JJ May 21, 2013 at 9:10 pm

seriously, just fill it with actors and actresses from AMC shows. They’re all great. Hendricks as the Annie Potts-type role. Darryl Dixon as a Ghostbuster.

Classick Material May 22, 2013 at 11:26 am

Would like to see them try and follow what’s going down in the IDW comics right now. New team consists of three woman and a man. You can probably rewrite Janine Melnitz if Annie Potts can’t do it or is deemed “too old”…

Howard Decker May 22, 2013 at 12:34 pm

Ooh I like that idea a lot. All of these comments have me regretting my all-male team!

Dave May 22, 2013 at 1:18 pm

I’ve had my personal GB reboot cast set for a while now, basing the actors on the mostly female team of the new ongoing comic series.

Janine Melnitz – Emma Stone
Agent Melanie Ortiz – Cobie Smulders
Kylie Griffin – Aubrey Plaza
Ron Alexander – Aaron Paul

Howard Decker May 22, 2013 at 1:20 pm

Man, that would be a freaking amazing cast. Well done.

michael clement June 13, 2013 at 4:08 pm

the all new cast for ghostbusters 3 that i would like to see in the new movie are ben affleck, matt damon, chris hemsworth and chris rock.

Howard Decker June 14, 2013 at 9:57 am

nice! Thanks for leaving a comment!

Max June 18, 2013 at 3:34 pm

I think some people here are missing the point. I read somewhere that the new movie will be much like the recently (in the last several years) released Ghostbusters video game. Where the original Ghostbusters are still at it, but getting too old to be running around carrying particle accelerators on their backs, so they hire a few “newbies” to train. I think the ideas that you’re “re-casting” certain parts or character types may be missing the mark here. That being said, my new Ghostbuster line up would be:
Tim Olyphant (’cause I love the suggestion and never would’ve thought of it)
James Franco
Ellen Page
Danni Pudi

Max June 18, 2013 at 4:03 pm

also, I think Aisha Tyler needs to be in there somewhere. I’m ashamed that I forgot her.

Cheezyspam June 19, 2013 at 12:04 pm

Slightly modified version of AdamS25’s cast

Bill Hader
Seth Rogen
Jay Burechel
Donald Glover

Assistant: Anna Kendrick or Emma Stone

Michael June 19, 2013 at 5:50 pm

My dream cast (with original parallels)

Venkman – Paul Rudd or Vince Vaughn
Stantz – I do like Hader for this role, but also Woody Harrelson.
Egon – This is somewhere they could go female, and if so, Cobie Smulders, Felicia Day, or Judy Greer. If they stick with male, Jay Baruchel, David Cross, or John C. Reily.
Winston – What I liked from the original about Winston was that he was just a dude, not a scientist. He was a blue-collar guy looking for a job, and had the balls to hunt ghosts. They don’t need a super funny guy here. Michael Jai White, Anthony Mackie

Louis – Jon Benjamin, Charlie Day
Assistant – Aubrey Plaza, Ellen Page

Howard Decker June 20, 2013 at 10:04 am

Plaza or Page as Janine would be amazing! I think they are going to go more sequel than reboot though, so the original actors would play the original characters, and the casting would be for new characters (younger Ghostbusters to take the reins from the originals)

aznarrac June 26, 2013 at 10:04 pm

Jack black, ben stiller, Jonah hill, Brandon Jackson

sirmichaelvalentine December 6, 2013 at 11:18 am

jack black would soo be perfect as a ghostbuster hes funny lovable and nerdy i also could see ben stiller in to he was great in tropic thunder and why not kevin james he’s another lovable actor that would be perfect as the nice ghostbuster just like ray plus his wight could be very funny for certain scenes just think mall cop i think we need nerdy actors for this to fly and there is gonna be a female but i dont know who lol

Evo Shandor July 8, 2013 at 3:30 pm

Howard Decker July 8, 2013 at 3:53 pm

I love it! Question about the format of your comment? Is there a tech reason for it? Very unique. Wondering if there is something to it.

Sunblock5000 July 17, 2013 at 12:53 pm

1. Charlie Day
2. Eddie Kaye Thomas
3. Kal Penn
4. James Franco

Female Lead: Isla Fisher

Make it happen!

Howard Decker July 17, 2013 at 1:06 pm

I’d love to see that happen! Thanks for the comment!

raven July 23, 2013 at 7:42 am

first off they need to have a girl in there change things up a bit all guy cast is boring already been there done that you know

Howard Decker July 23, 2013 at 10:23 am

agree 100%. Thanks for the comment!

Gorkous July 23, 2013 at 8:46 pm

The cast I came up with a few years ago were:

Seth Rogen for Ray
Ryan Renolds for Peter
Sasha Cohen for Egon
Mos Def for Winston

Howard Decker July 24, 2013 at 2:22 pm

Those are good- and perhaps what Ryan Reynolds needs is to be part of an ensemble (like he was in Blade Trinity) as opposed to headlining these big budget summer films.

bodash July 26, 2013 at 12:09 pm

Fred Armisen
Toks Olagundoye
Seth Rogen
Ariel Tweto
Bruce Willis
Owen Wilson

Marcus July 31, 2013 at 9:12 am

What about Matthew Gray Gubler (from Criminal Minds)?

Howard Decker July 31, 2013 at 10:03 am

I don’t watch Criminal Minds, but after a quick peek at his IMDB page I could see that. Thanks for the comment!

finger2 August 23, 2013 at 4:12 am

I think bill hader is a given. I’m gonna throw in Craig Robinson and if Jonah hill has to be included, ……slimmer.

finger2 August 23, 2013 at 4:17 am

Also directed by Tim and Eric with the villain being a ghostly Louis ck

Howard Decker August 23, 2013 at 12:27 pm

I’d be there opening night

sirmichaelvalentine December 6, 2013 at 11:36 am

my cast i would say.

ben stiller
kevin james
jack black
owen wilson
and
leslie mann

their going with 5 this time 4 male 1 female its already been said by dan aykroyd who’s setting everything up

HowardTheDeck December 8, 2013 at 12:47 pm

I can dig that
