Toy Review – Diamond Select Toys 1/15 scale Munsters Koach

Diamond’s licensing department has done it again.

Diamond Select Toys, the company that has delighted children of the 70s & 80s with new lines celebrating properties such as Thundercats, Knight Rider, Ghostbusters and Marvel continues to impress with their new line of toys and collectibles based on The Munsters.

The Munsters TV series only ran from 1964-66, but ran heavily in syndication as children born in the 70s came of age. It was part of my daily afterschool rotation, alongside syndicated heavy hitters such as Leave it to Beaver and The Brady Bunch.

Diamond Select continues to foster our nostalgic love for properties like The Munsters with this 1/15th scale vehicle, The Munsters Koach.

The box is as you’d expect- a window on the front and top panel gives a good view of the vehicle inside.

On one side panel, there is a “Try Me” opening at the rear of the vehicle. You can push the license plate to activate some of the vehicle’s sounds.

First Impression

I like this toy. To be honest, I did grow up watching The Munsters, and their car was amusing, but it was never a highlight of the show for me. Don’t get me wrong, basing a toy on this vehicle is an amazing idea, and Diamond has executed it very well. I think it’s safe to say that this toy will make me look back at the television version of the Koach more fondly. I never realized quite how much was going on with this car.

There is a lot of detail here. The engine block and steering column are well sculpted.

All four of the vehicle’s doors open.

The vehicle’s trademark rumble seat comes as a separate part but snaps on easily and firmly.

The vehicle has 5 sounds that occur in conjunction with 5 points of light. You activate the lights and sounds by pressing the license plate on the rear of the car.

Here’s a quick video of me running through the various lights & sounds:

The only knock on this product might not even be attributable to the manufacturer. When I was testing out all of the vehicle’s moving parts, I noticed that the crank on the front bumper was movable. I barely turned it, and it snapped in half.

The reason I hesitate to fault the toy’s construction: when the package arrived, it felt like it had been in a freezer for 3 days. Temperatures topped out at 10 degrees in my area the days that this package was en route. I wouldn’t be surprised if the deep freeze compromised the strength of this tiny piece of plastic.

Conclusion

I’d recommend this toy to any fan of the property. The Munsters 1/15 scale Koach retails for $60, which is in line with comparable vehicles and playsets geared toward collectors. If you are a big fan of The Munsters, this is a must have for your collection- especially since there hasn’t been a huge amount (relative to other shows) of collectible Munsters merchandise available in the past.

Man, I WORKED for Diamond and you’ve got more connections than me! Anyway, nice write up. Never been a Munsters fan (thought I loved Munsters, Today!), but this thing looks cool
