UnderScoopFire Podcast #19 – From 80s Childhood ’til Now: Oh How Far We’ve Come

by Howie Decker @HowardTheDeck on January 25, 2012

in Podcast, The 80s

Last week our “Roundtable Voltron” discussed what we were looking forward to in 2012. This week the guys from UnderScoopFire got on their “computer phones” again and examined how far we’ve come since the 1980s and our childhood. We broke our discussion into 5 distinct topics:

  • Video Games – from Atari 2600/7800 to XBox 360
  • Movies – from Three Amigos to Anchorman
  • Inter-personal Communication – from letter writing to texting/tweeting/Facebook
  • TV – from ALF to Alcatraz
  • Comics/Toys/Games – from 5 points of articulation to today

To claim that we “kept it classy” is like saying He-Man’s wardrobe was “conservative”.

A sample of what we covered:

Yeah, it was a great discussion – but here’s the thing: we didn’t realize how much fun we’d have with it, and we only got through 3 segments. Stay tuned for Part 2 of “Oh How Far We’ve Come” where we finish up with TV, Comics, Toys, Games, and probably some sports, cartoons, and wrestling talk.

*blush* Ahhh thanks guys! I appreciate the shout out! I love the show. Steaming pile indeed. As for the sultry sexy voice… Well I’m really ugly and totally look like Chet from Weird Science after Lisa turned him inhuman. I am totally kidding by the way. Thanks Chapmann for letting me know. I’mma need you to get the name right. The name and the blog is a reference from the Lethal Weapon movies which I sincerely love. As for your next podcast y’all should totally do a MILF/DILF (for the ladies) countdown. That should truly be interesting. Until next time…

Corey Chapman January 24, 2012 at 8:49 am

love the feeback, Ms However you say your name! (lol) Love the idea for the countdown!

Tank January 24, 2012 at 11:07 am

Tom Bosley to get the DILF ball rolling.

Howard Decker January 24, 2012 at 2:29 pm

LMAO! Not the “Boz” most ladies would choose.

Classick Material January 24, 2012 at 2:43 pm

“DILF Ball” sounds like a sport invented by Buddy Lembeck.

Howard Decker January 24, 2012 at 5:48 pm

Why must Willie Aames invade every one of our conversations? And this is not even a religious site!!

Howard Decker January 24, 2012 at 2:28 pm

HA! It was our pleasure to shout out – you keep dropping those profound comments and tweets and we will always show love. The MILF/DILF list is a great idea – I think we’d need a woman’s perspective on that show though – possible guest appearance??

Jason Gross (@SockOfFleagulls) January 24, 2012 at 10:52 am

I’m cappy to hontribute to the comments always….mainly for the rewards points…

Jason Gross (@SockOfFleagulls) January 24, 2012 at 1:27 pm

Seriously, very entertaining as always…Tank’s “requote” from Star Wars had me in tears!!

Howard Decker January 24, 2012 at 2:30 pm

We might have to institute a 2 drink maximum on recording nights

Brian Morin January 25, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Agreed! I was laughing so hard I almost drove off the road!.

Howard Decker January 25, 2012 at 10:08 pm

safety first! Losing a listener is losing 25% of our audience!

Howard Decker January 24, 2012 at 2:29 pm

you are a valuable Fart of the Pamily!

Classick Material January 24, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Wow.. just wow… where do I start?

Well, thanks for the mentions of our meager site and show– we had a great time having Howie on with us. We now understand what the rest of you guys have to put up with and don’t envy you one bit.

Great episode, I loved the trip back to simpler times. I can’t recall the last time I actually handwrote a letter to a friend, but the fact that you guys did that with each other over the years is something special. As a C4 owner I can’t say I knew anyone that had the VIC-20 machine, but I’m sure the game libraries were pretty similar. Can’t wait to hear you tackle comics and wrestling on the next show. I’ll tell you one major difference in comic books I’ve noticed– no more full page “Prizes and Cash” ads! I miss having the chance to clip that section and mail it in with a check or money order to get some sea monkeys or the radio controlled blimp. Ah well… frogs in winter.

Classick Material January 24, 2012 at 2:45 pm

*That’s supposed to say “C64 owner” not “C4 owner”. Doh!

Howard Decker January 24, 2012 at 5:47 pm

Didn’t you own some C4, too though? It was nice to get outside and blow stuff up when you got tired of playing video games. I’m joking! Who gets tired of playing video games??

Howard Decker January 24, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Those Prizes and Cash ads were the best! I think we put one up on our FB page a while back. I always wanted the “Blackstone Magician Set”.

Thanks again for having me on your pod, the slow Mega-Powers handshake continues as we plot another UnderScoopSlither Crossover Event!

Brian Morin January 25, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Here’s an obscure 80 s reference. Did any of you ever watch Richard Hall’s Vanishing America? It was an HBO special about a guy who sold seeds for a prizes and cash type club and never got his prize, a Wilt Chamberlain basketball and goal. It was basically the previous generation’s version of what we’re doing now by looking back at our childhoods.

Howard Decker January 25, 2012 at 10:09 pm

Hm, no, but I remember him on HBO’s Not Necessarily the News – where he had his “Sniglets”

Engineernerd January 24, 2012 at 5:26 pm

I had an Atari computer with a cassette recorder.

I was surprised the 6 lever/4 lever Atari 2600 discussion didn’t come up. (Mine was 6)

Thanks for both the shout outs!

Howard Decker January 24, 2012 at 5:45 pm

I was too young for the 2600 – my first was a 7800 (with the rainbow bar and the 4 buttons) – played the hell outta that thing though. As for the shout outs, no need to thank us – thank YOU for continuing the conversation in the comments and on Twitter. It is truly appreciated.

JD January 25, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Confession: I haven’t seen Three Amigos in probably 20 years, I don’t remember shit from it… and until I discovered UNDERSCOOPFIRE I forgot about the movie. I should see it again.

we had an Apple IIE computer when I was in grade school. I can’t imagine what trying to use the internet on that old dinosaur. LOL

Howard Decker January 25, 2012 at 10:10 pm

Nice! We had an Apple IIc – brutal. LOVED it at the time though.

Get on Three Amigos! It is worth your time. It stand the 25 year test. The Blu-ray just came out!

Dex January 26, 2012 at 10:13 am

Ok, I’ve been visiting the site for a few weeks and really like what you’re doing. Even though I’m technically a child of the 70s, I’ve always felt more like an 80s kid.
So I’m going to check out this audio thingamig you guys do since it sounds pretty rad.

Howard Decker January 26, 2012 at 10:15 am

Yes! Thank you Dex! In one of the recent eps we actually mention you as a valuable “commenter” – I think #18 maybe? I appreciate you checking it out, and let us know what you think! (EPS #0 thru #17 are pretty straight arrow, discussing the topic at hand – then as of #18 we kinda drop our guard a bit and let loose.)

Dex January 27, 2012 at 9:50 am

Yeah hey, thanks for the shoutout! The show was a riot. I like that you guys are just guys hanging out and talking geek keepin it kinda loose structured.

We had the Ataris 2600 and 5200 when I was a kid. When the NES came out with Star Wars that caused me to get my first credit card. SNES was the last console system I’ve owned.

My first computer was a TI-99 with cassette drive which was eventually replaced by a C=64 with floppy drive and 2400 baud modem. Remember when game copy protection was a code wheel?

The BBS was another communication milestone but of course it was mostly local people since you still had to dial the phone. And you had to wait until the BBS line was free to even login.

Remember when you could place a local call using 5 digits? (Man I’m old!)

Ah the good ol days…

Howard Decker January 27, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Dex, thanks very much for your feedback. What you said in the first line of your last comment really goes a long way with us, as it is what we have been trying to focus on for the last few eps. I have shared your comment with the other 4 guys, and they appreciate it as well.

As for all of the vintage computer talk, I’ll have our guy SharePointJoe get back to ya 🙂
Pre-AppleIIc, I am clueless on!
