Top 5 Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.)

by Howie Decker @HowardTheDeck on August 1, 2011

in The 80s

Saturday mornings, 1986. What a nice feeling to be able to sleep in! Roll out of bed by 9am at the absolute earliest, whip up some Carnation Instant Breakfast, knock down a couple bowls of Lucky Charms, and I was ready for my day. What better way to start off the weekend than some professional wrestling?

WWF Superstars was the program of choice, firmly entrenched in the 12pm timeslot for years. As the show ended at 1pm, I had become accustomed to watching the opening credits of the following show, The Fall Guy (I wanted that jet pack so bad), but one Saturday I was smacked squarely in the face by a new resident of the 1pm timeslot.

UPDATE: Click here to read Godiva and Little Egypt’s hilarious reaction to this list!

In a briliant programming maneuver, G.L.O.W. (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) was scheduled directly following WWF Superstars, in prime position to capture all of the wrestling viewers. GLOW was an upstart female wrestling promotion, composed mainly of actresses, models, dancers and stunt women who were looking for their big break.

GLOW fulfilled a niche that was at the time a low priority for WWF, that of female wrestling. Sure, WWF had Wendi Richter and the Fabulous Moolah among others, but in the 80s the women’s division fell far short of today’s WWE Divas. GLOW was right there to capitalize on the opening, with its over-the-top characters and far-fetched storylines.

Here now,the Top 5 Ladies of G.L.O.W.:

5. Mt. Fiji

The class of the “heavyweight” division, to this day most GLOW alumni list her as their toughest opponent.

Her big break:

Played the masked wrestler “Masked Mabel#2” on the “Mama Mania” episode of Mama’s Family.

4. Godiva

A perennial championship contender, she won the majority of her matches. Rode to the ring on a white horse, one of the most memorable entrances of any professional wrestler.

Her big break:

Third degree blackbelt in TaeKwonDo, she is involved in vocational ministry. Visit her Facebook page here.

UPDATE: Godiva has proven to be one of the coolest and classiest G.L.O.W. alums out there – she discovered and shared this list, commented (see below), and sent over some pics to include! She may be #4 on this list, but she’s #1 in our hearts!

G.L.O.W.’s Godiva today, gorgeous as ever!

3. Hollywood

One half of the most memorable tag team in GLOW’s history, Hollywood & Vine, these girls bent the rules to their advantage on a weekly basis and eventually became GLOW Tag Team Champions.

Her big break: Guest starred on Married…With Children and was featured in Playboy.

2. Americana

The USA baby! Fulfilled the “Patriotic American” quota represented in any self-respecting wrestling promotion in the 1980s.

Her big break: She is a talented artist. Follow her on Twitter @AmericanaGLOW and check out the link to her work.

1. Babe the Farmer’s Daughter

The Farmer’s Daughter character was a lot like WWF’s Demolition tag team. There were several versions, and it really could have been anybody underneath the makeup. Just like Demolition had Ax, Smash, and added Crush toward the end of their run of destruction, GLOW had Sally the Farmer’s Daughter, Amy the Farmer’s Daughter, Hank the Angry Farmer’s Daughter, and so on. Amongst the murky history of the character, Babe was the best.

Her big break: She is the current owner and promoter of GLOW (yes, it still exists). They have a current Facebook page that 3316 people like. Make that 3317…
