The Pop Culture References in the 2013 Edition of ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ Make Me Sad for Us

Comedian Owen Weber has “covered” Billy Joel’s seminal 1989 hit We Didn’t Start the Fire, but replaced all of Joel’s original “rapid fire allusions” with 2013 pop culture references.

It’s a fun listen, but it’s also a sad reflection on what the average consumer considers “meaningful” information nowadays. While Joel’s version made mention of Red China, the Korean War and The Catcher in the Rye, the 2013 version touts world-changing iconoclasts such as “Weiner’s weenie” and Grumpy Cat.

Check out Owen Weber’s YouTube page (linked in the video) for his full portfolio.
