Sports entertainment website SE Scoops is reporting that former Smashing Pumpkins frontman and lifelong wrestling fan Billy Corgan is set to purchase an ownership stake in TNA Wrestling. From AlternativeNation.net’s Brett Buchanan (via SE Scoops):

I have heard from a second hand source who is close to a key figure in the rumored TNA Wrestling sales discussions who has verified that Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is far along in his talks to purchase the company. This source went as far to say that he believes it is a “done deal” that Corgan will buy TNA, though the source didn’t know what percentage Corgan will be purchasing or the specifics of the deal. The source also says that Corgan has recently made a connection to somebody very wealthy, though it is not known if this party would have anything to do with the deal.

If you watch any pro wrestling you’ve probably seen Corgan sitting ringside at either a TNA or WWE show, especially when they are in Chicago. I’ve heard Billy was a huge ECW fan, here’s hoping he brings some of that small-ball mentality to the business instead of trying to go toe to toe with Vince McMahon. Put your resources toward developing compelling characters and engaging storylines and matches, not production value.

Here’s a thought- CM Punk has been seriously considering retiring next year, what are the chances he could be convinced by a fellow Illinoisan to ride in and help “save” TNA in some capacity?

Despite all his rage, he’s still just a rat in a cage match.
