3 Classic Arcade Games We’d Love to See Revived in 2016

in Gaming

Reaching back to the past for inspiration is extremely popular today. And not just in the world of gaming – movies are remade and fashion trends are revived. Last year Pixels, the shady Adam Sandler “space invaders” movie (literally) has brought classic games back into the center of attention. In a retro extravaganza champions of classic Arcade titles have saved the world of a race of invading alien Donkey Kongs, Pac Men and Centipedes, reminding us of a time when games were less complicated and much more fun. Much like the online casino games of today.

This has reminded me of the times I’ve spent in a coin-op arcade as a kid. And of the great games I’ve played as a child, games I would love to see revived on a modern gaming console.

Airwolf (complete with a fresh take on the series)

Created by series master Donald P. Bellisario (responsible for titles like Magnum PI, JAG or NCIS), the classic series involved a high-tech military chopper (played by a Bell 222) and a lot of cold war action. The series was transformed into a video game released on all the times’ platforms, including C64, Spectrum, NES or Sega MegaDrive.

The series – as well as the video game – could be revived today, with the re-ignition of the “cold war” with Russia, and the number of conflicts in the Middle East. The high tech chopper – complete with a fresh crew – could hunt down terrorists and retrieve covert agents from half a world away. Both on the TV screen and the computer display.

Bomberman

A classic multiplayer game, released in the early 1990s, which would make a wonderful addition to the world of gaming today. Online multiplayer games tend to be extremely complex today, with elaborate technology trees and character development.

What Bomberman could bring to the table would be a fast-paced gameplay and the simplicity of blowing the opponents into oblivion.

Comix Zone

One of the most hardcore, badass games I’ve ever played. Comix Zone was one of a kind, standing out from the crowd of the zillions of beat-em-up games with its comic book style and extensive amounts of adrenaline. The rock soundtrack was just the icing on the cake. The game is still playable on modern day consoles, and runs on Windows-based PCs, it is in a dire need of updated graphics and sounds.

With a bit of work it could turn into a game to revive the beat-em-up genre. Unfortunately it has missed the obvious date for re-release (its 20th anniversary was last year), but even a late remake would be appropriate, I guess.
