5. Spider-Man
Of the handful of globally recognizable superheroes, Spider-Man is likely the most relatable in that almost everyone knows what it’s like to be an awkward youth. Our ability to almost universally relate to Peter Parker sets him apart from the comic book superheroes who were born on other planets or rank in the 100th percentile of wealth or intelligence. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t at least respect the idea of Spider-Man.
4. Godzilla
One of the oldest properties on this list, Godzilla first appeared in 1954. Over the next 60 years the monster would appear in almost 30 films and become a globally recognized pop culture icon. Even if you’re not a fan of the genre or the character, you’ve got to respect Godzilla.
3. Star Wars
It’s possible that Star Wars is just loved by SO many people that the haters just don’t want to bother angering the overpowering masses. I can’t imagine a more uphill nerd battle than hating Star Wars (and to be clear, we’re strictly talking OT here). I know there are certain sci-fi lovers who prefer the Trek over the Wars, but of the Star Trek fans I know, all of them respect Star Wars for what it is, and the cultural impact it has made.
2. Disney
Let’s get something straight- I’m talking Disney the content-producer, not Disney the mega-corporation. Even if you’re not a fan of The Mouse, and never plan to visit the theme park(s), you have to respect the products and entertainment Disney continues to put out since 1923.
1. Batman
There are two certains in life: death and Batman. Even taxes have loopholes. Batman does not.
Take a moment to think back over your life. Go as far back as you can remember. Have you ever heard anyone say “Batman sucks”? You haven’t, because no one thinks that.
