With the likes of Peter Jackson’s trilogy of ‘The Hobbit’ and the popularity of HBO’s hit fantasy series ‘Game of Thrones’ reaching millions of fans and viewers it’s quite clear that a certain legendary creature is back on top once more. Dragons have always been a popular staple of fantasy fiction and other mythology and even during the 90’s they were showing up in a number of hit video games.
CASTLE OF DRAGON
The decade kicked off with a vast array of dragon-based games and this was one of the more memorable offerings which came from Athena and Seta. The side-scrolling platform game which was developed from an unknown original arcade game first appeared on the classic NES console and dealt with the typical slay the dragon and rescue the princess gaming tropes.
SPYRO THE DRAGON
This mischievous little purple dragon was the centre stage for the self titled Sony PlayStation release in 1998. Spyro heads across the Dragon Realms in order to help save his fellow dragons from imprisonment and to help defeat the evil Gnasty Gnorc.
The game spawned a large number of sequels and spin-offs for a variety of platforms for over a decade following the original release.
DRAGONSTONE
Fantasy RPG Dragonstone arrived on the Amiga back in 1994 and followed on from the action adventure game Darkmere released the year before. The game has a very Zelda-like feel to it and was quite simplistic in its gameplay leaving little for avid gamers to be overly challenged by. A perfect starting game for newbie gamers you took the part of a hero who travels across seven fantasy worlds to vanquish fire breathers and other creatures in order to rescue Princess Kirstie.
DRAGONSEEDS
This PlayStation game unleashed in 1998 gave players more of a nurturing challenge as well as just tackling dragons head on. The purpose of the game was to clone a dragon and then raise it as your own until it was powerful enough to battle against other dragons in an arena.
