“And a woman is just a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke.” – Rudyard Kipling in The Betrothed

Cigars have an attraction that to the uninitiated is a mystery. Good cigars are said to be like fine wine – to be savored in comfort and in the company of good friends. Kipling’s line reflects how aficionados value their cigars but ignores the fact that many women enjoy cigars too.

Throughout history there have been many famous cigar smokers – royalty, politicians and celebrities from all walks of life. Among the most notable past and present celebrity cigar smokers:

1. Sir Winston Churchill – Britain’s charismatic wartime leader was a lover of fine food and drink and was seldom seen without a cigar, smoking up to 10 a day. He usually smoked Cuban cigars, his favorite being Romeo y Julieta.

2. John F. Kennedy – The 35th President of the United States was an avid cigar fan. It is said that one of his acts as President was to order his staff to collect as many Cuban Petit Upmann cigars as possible, the day before he signed the embargo banning American trade with Cuba.

3. Jack Nicholson – A brilliant actor and director famous for his roles in great movies like One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and The Shining, Nicholson was a cigarette smoker until 1973 when he smoked his first cigar during the filming of The Last Detail. From that moment he was hooked and the Montecristo became his favorite cigar.

4. Michael Douglas – Actor and producer Michael Douglas has played many television and movie roles, one of his most successful being Gordon Gecko in Wall Street. Like Nicholson, he enjoys a Montecristo, especially when playing a round of golf.

5. James Woods – Once one of Hollywood’s bad boys, Woods is renowned for his intense roles. He is often seen on the golf course and is a lover of Montecristo cigars.

6. Whoopi Goldberg – One of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, Whoopi Goldberg is known for her comic roles and routines but is equally at home in serious portrayals. She loves cigars, and despite having a preference for small cigars, enjoys the occasional Cohiba.

7. Ciara – Award-winning singer-songwriter Ciara has her own style and way of doing things. She is not afraid to experiment and has been seen enjoying a Cuban Corona.

8. Danny Devito – Comedic wizard Danny Devito has enjoyed cigars since being introduced to them by fellow actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has moved from Cohibas to Partegas and then to Bolivars.

9. Demi Moore – Once the highest paid actress in film, Demi Moore has experienced many highs and lows in her career. She has often courted controversy but her taste in cigars is impeccable with the small Montecristo Joyita and the Cohiba No.2 and Montecristo No.2 among her favorites.

10. Tom Cruise – Star of countless successful movies including Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise is partial to Cohibas. He enjoyed them so much that he once had a standing order for them with tobacconists in Geneva and London.

You too can enjoy the cigars favored by the rich and famous. Boisdale has a great selection of fine cigars, many of which cannot be obtained elsewhere. Old brands like Partagas, Romeo y Julieta and Punch rub shoulders with newer brands like Boliva, Montecristo and Cohiba and you can smoke them after your Scottish-themed meal on Boisdale’s cigar terrace for a perfect end to a prefect evening.

Also, Hershey’s Chocolate founder & super nice guy Milton Hershey smoked cigars. Sometimes, if you’re in the one building, you can almost smell them. True story.
