Podcast #45 – Duck & Cover (Scooplear Fallout)

Last week it seemed as though some of our elementary school Cold War drills were going to come in handy.

After the release of the 50 Greatest Comedies of All Time, specifically Podcast Episode #44 revealing the 10 funniest movies of all time, some of us may have felt the instinct to climb under our desks and curl into a ball.

Most american children of the 80s had the joy of something similar in their grade school days- for a refresher, check out the classic video below.

The fallout was felt all over UnderScoopFire, and it was great! We have always said, there is no point in creating lists of beloved things if it isn’t going to spark debate and discussion – and that it did!

In this episode:

  • Beef. It makes for a good podcast.
  • Howie, Googs & Joe reveal their Top 10s (with some surprises)
  • How those rankings would have affected the overall list
  • Little people, albino strippers & San Diego Chargers
  • Tweet of the Week from @HEELZiggler
  • Mr. Serious makes his debut on the Bad Joke of the Week stage!

Now that we’ve beaten this dead horse…I still feel like more needs to be said about Jim Carrey. Yeah some are outdated, but he practically carried the comedy torch from Chevy, Bill, and Steve at the end of the 80s through the 90s. The majority would probably say that torch was passed off to Will Farrell after he left SNL, but after watching Poppers Penguins with my family last year, that movie was definitely a step in the right direction.

In any event, for me Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, and Dumb and Dumber are all top 20 movies for me had I made a list. Ace would be in my top 50 too.

Dumb and Dumber was bar far Jim’s funniest movie. So yea. Def. top 50.
Ace maybe top 75. After that- his movies weren’t good nor that funny. MASK may have been funny to me when it came out. But it hasn’t held up at all. Same w/Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty? Ugh. 10 years ago he may have been a lot higher but there are a ton of movies that have held up a lot better and are a lot older.

You guys are right about Anchorman. I love it to death, but it’s the kind of movie that was saved by editing. Originally, it was ALL OVER the place. If you can track it down, watch “Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie.” Basically, it’s Anchorman 1.5, as they created an entire separate movie from cut subplots and outtakes. Maya Rudolph leads a Black Panther crime spree. It’s just as uneven as the main movie, but the laughs come from the fact that you realize it was just a bunch of hilarious people trying to make each other laugh.

Funny you mention that, Tank just brought it over to my place to watch – we didn’t get to it, but will have to soon. I agree with you, the value of it to me was always that I knew I was watching a bunch of funny people try to make each other laugh, pulling out all the stops. It translates much better than it should, and that’s impressive.
