Marvel’s Doctor Strange: What Can We Expect?

Doctor Strange, the upcoming superhero film inspired by Marvel comics stands to be the 14th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Many various incarnations of the film have been produced including a television film in 1987 and Doctor Strange: The Sorcerers Supreme, an animated video. But what does 2016’s Doctor Strange have in store for us?

In short, the film is about Stephen Strange, a well respected but arrogant New York Surgeon with a cynical attitude. Strange is involved in a car accident and injures sustained from the crash meant he could no longer perform surgery.

Following the injury, Strange splurged a sizeable amount of his fortune to rescue his shaky hands, but the treatments failed. He then turns to alcohol and resorted to illegal practices in order to fund his alcoholism, performing shady back alley procedures.

Strange hears of a powerful mystic known as The Ancient One. Although skeptical, Strange is willing to try anything at his point, so he pawns his remaining possessions and flies to Tibet. Much to his disappointment, The Ancient One refused to heal him, instead offering him mystical training.

Interestingly, The Ancient One is set to be gender-swapped in the film and will be played by Anglo-Scottish actress Tilda Swinton. Swinton is pretty hyped about the playing the role: “I’m a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I’m really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what’s done in this particular world. It’s all about creativity. It’s not about everything exploding at the end. It’s about something very different.”

One of the biggest tasks the film faces is introducing the alternate realms and dimensions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The planes of existence that Strange frequently visits are unprecedented in Marvel films.

Regarding the hallucinatory visuals featured in the film, Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) promised, “There’s going to be some crazy sh*t going on”.

Director Scott Derrickson is also excited about the aesthetic aspects of the film: “I was always interested in the extreme mind-bending visuals of the comics. I had very ambitious plans for the visuals, which were rooted in the comics, that movies haven’t done yet. And a lot of that goes back to the Ditko artwork and all that ’60s craziness you see in the comics.”

Even prior to the ‘60s, superheroes were present throughout Western culture and have featured in American comic books since the 1930s. To this day, little boys and girls want to be superheroes, and fancy dress shops are now packed with superhero costumes.

It’s not only fans, films and comics that superheroes have inspired though, they have even gone as far as to inspire all types of other media including fan art, music and even online casinos. The Marvel themed slots at PaddyPower are some of the best slot sites for including many of our favorite characters such as Iron Man, Fantastic  Four and the Avengers.

Is this proof that the legend of superheroes will never die? How ironic!
