Where Everybody Knows Your Name: 15 of the Most Memorable Sitcom Sets and Props

by Joe Zicari @SharePointJoe on May 10, 2013

in Television

You know how much we love lists here at UnderScoopFire.  So I brainstormed and tried to find a list no one has covered.  I scoured the interwebs and came up with nothing.  Seriously, take my word for it.  The internet is barren.  You won’t find anything.

Moving on…

This particular list has to do with sitcoms through the years and particular sets or props that aired.

Let me be clear, this list goes in no particular order..as much as I love rankings, I do not like being picked on by people who are smarter than me.

Arrested Development – The Stair Car

“Watch out for bridges and hop-ons; you’re gonna get some hop-ons.”

Since Arrested Development is coming back very soon, I figured I’d start with this prop.

The awesome stair car is used continuously throughout the series run.  Quite often we see Michael Bluth behind the wheel.

Fun fact: Three different truck cabs were used over the filming of the series.  The Bluth company logos on the side are different from episode to episode (also hearing it WILL show up in the new eps).

Runner-up: The Banana Stand, Gob’s segway, the model home

I Love Lucy- Kramer’s Kandy Kitchen

Switching with their husbands, Lucy and Ethel must get jobs.  They’re only qualified for one job: working at Kramer’s Kandy Kitchen.

This episode has gone down in history as one of the most famous, if not best episodes of ‘I Love Lucy’.

Fun fact: This was Lucille Balls favorite epsiode.

Runner-up: None

Seinfeld- Jerry’s Apartment

A lot happened at Jerry’s apartment over the course the series run.  It’s hard to pick one great moment but the one that sticks out for me is George running out of Jerry’s bathroom yelling “Vandelay! Say Vandelay!”

Fun fact: Jerry lives in apt 5A, Kramer in apt 5B.  However in a couple episodes in season 2 Jerry lives in apartment 3A

Runner-up: Rye Marble Bread, Schnitzer’s Bakery

Golden Girls- Their Kitchen

What hasn’t happened in their kitchen?  Anger, tears, laughs and food.  Ahhhh food.  No issue is too big or too small when food is involved.  Seriously, there was a lot of food.  Everyone remembers their favorite dish tho..right?…. That’s right.  Cheesecake.

Fun fact: None

Runner-up: Lanai

Mash- Green Army Tents

Seriously.  How easy of a set designer do you have to be?  Ok, today we’re going to need…a green tent. Yes, I know other stuff happened on the show but a bulk of it was done under those drab green tents.

Fun fact: This has nothing to do with the tents themselves but during the first season, Hawkeye, Trapper and Franks had an African-American bunkmate who’s character name was Spearchucker Jones, played by actor Timothy Brown.  #Cism

Runner-up: Gurneys, bunks

Friends- Monica’s apartment

Central Perk or the apartment? It was actually hard choice.  Originally I had Central Perk and as I was writing up the article I changed my mind.

There are a few reasons but most specifically Season 4 Episode 12: The One with the Embryos.  It’s the episode where Joey & Chandler win the apartment from Monica & Rachel.  To me, it’s one of the funniest episodes that they ever did.  Oh ya, Phoebe is having her brothers baby.

Fun fact: In a flashback episode, Central Perk is actually a bar at one point.   Also, in the earlier episodes there was a wooden beam in Monica’s apartment that suddenly disappears.

Runner-up: Central Perk

The Cosby Show- Living Room

Again, another hard one to decide on.  I chose the living room because that’s where a lot of the family interaction happened.  From TV watching and story telling, to kids bouncing on Cliff’s knee and of course the Denise’s reggae boyfriend (credit to eclectik for the reminder).  The Cosby show was light hearted one minute and super serious the next.  Also, Rudy had a better stache then Theo and Cockroach.

Fun fact:  The painting that Mrs. Huxtable won at the auction went for $11,000.  It hug over the living room mantle for the remainder of the 8 seasons.  The actual painter (Ellis Wilson) never actually received more than $300 for any painting he did in his lifetime.

Runner-up: Kitchen

Great list! Can’t believe you didn’t put The Max and the Peach Pit, but I forgive you!

SharePointJoe May 11, 2013 at 7:50 am

We did a podcast on both (fair enough about the Max) but 90210 wasn’t a sitcom.

Hail Mary May 10, 2013 at 4:51 pm

Community- the study room
And, I’m not sure about this one but, New Girl – the loft

Howard Decker May 10, 2013 at 11:19 pm

I like the bar on New Girl too, just not top 15 yet

Lamar The Revenger May 10, 2013 at 8:08 pm

Thank God Barney Miller got mentioned. Also, another VERY IMPORTANT honorable mention. The Kitchen at the Governor’s Mansion on Benson.

Howard Decker May 10, 2013 at 11:20 pm

Yes! Where all the action happened. Should we throw the Soap livingroom on there too?

Corey Chapman (@chapmanrunner) May 11, 2013 at 11:00 am

Great work with this. Love it.

I would include the kitchen from Family Ties, Charlie Moore’s history classroom, Head of The Class, and Over Our Heads gift shop from Facts of Life. What?

SharePointJoe May 11, 2013 at 11:51 am

Family Ties kitchen was an Honorable mention.
