10 Things That Every Nerd Respects Even if They Aren’t a Fan

in Nerd Culture

There are certain movies, shows, characters and franchises in the nerd realm that incite debate between passionate fans and those who “just don’t get it”. For every avid Lord of the Rings fan, there’s someone else who is firmly entrenched in the “It’s just three hours of walking” camp.

For all of the divisive properties out there, there are some that are relatively hater-free. While nothing is universally loved, these 10 things are widely respected by every nerd, even if they can’t be counted as a fan:

10. Wolverine

Comic book fans who don’t read any Wolverine titles still typically respect the character. Movie fans who have been disappointed by any of the X-movies never pin the films’ failures on Wolverine. Plain and simple: nerds respect Wolverine.

9. Doctor Who

Science-fiction fans who don’t count Doctor Who among their passions still understand the cultural significance of a program that has existed since 1963. The show is a veritable British pop culture institution, and has enjoyed multiple generations of relevance- something very few nerdy properties can claim.

8. The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time sits atop most lists of the best video games of all time, with A Link to the Past not far behind. Even those who haven’t picked up a controller of any kind since 1989 know and respect the Legend of Zelda franchise. The Final Fantasy and Mario franchises rank highly as well, but you’d be hard pressed to find a nerd that doesn’t respect The Legend of Zelda.

7. Indiana Jones

When’s the last time a true film nerd told you Indiana Jones was overrated? I’m sure it has happened, because some people derive sick pleasure from contrarianism, but here in the land of the sane and reasonable, even non-Indy fans respect the trilogy. (See what I did there?)

6. vampires

Vampires have been present in fiction since the 18th century. They could have easily ranked #1 on this list, as most people respect the various iterations of the creatures in pop culture, but the divisiveness of the Twilight series may have slightly tarnished the image of vampires for a whole generation.
